Extrusion Die Manufacturing | Custom Die Machining Services

When food extrusion lines need replacement dies or polymer compounding equipment requires custom tooling, the quality and precision of those parts directly impact production efficiency and product quality. GQ Machining manufactures custom extrusion dies from Hastelloy, Inconel, and 316 stainless steel for equipment manufacturers across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Our 40 years of combined exotic metal experience means we understand the complex profiles, tight tolerances, and surface finish quality that extrusion dies demand.

Extrusion Die Types We Manufacture

Extrusion dies vary widely in design depending on the material being processed and the application. We manufacture all common die types to your specifications:

Flex-Lip Dies

Used in film and sheet extrusion, Flex-Lip dies allow manual adjustment of the gap opening to control film thickness during production. These dies require precise machining of the adjustment mechanism, proper material selection for consistent flex, and careful finishing to ensure smooth operation under production pressure. We machine Flex-Lip dies in 316 stainless steel for sanitary food processing applications and Inconel 625 for high-temperature polymer compounds.

Ribbon, Rod, and Tubing Dies

Fixed-geometry dies are used for continuous profiles. The internal passages must be precisely engineered to ensure even material distribution, minimize pressure drop, and prevent stagnant zones where material can degrade. Rod and tubing dies require exceptional bore surface finish quality (mirror finish) to prevent material degradation and ensure product quality. Our 5-axis CNC milling capabilities allow us to machine complex internal passages with the precision these dies demand.

Film and Sheet Dies

Film and sheet dies require large opening dimensions while maintaining the structural integrity and internal pressure balance needed for consistent product quality. We machine film dies up to 12 inches, requiring careful material selection and machining strategy to prevent distortion during the cutting process. These dies typically require 5-axis CNC milling to achieve the complex geometries and internal balance passages required for even material distribution.

For extrusion lines running abrasive polymers or reinforced compounds, Colmonoy-plated screw elements and barrel components complement precision-machined dies by extending wear life across the full extrusion system. See our other machinable parts.

Material Selection for Extrusion Dies

The material you choose for your extrusion die impacts both the die’s lifespan and the quality of the final product. Different applications demand different materials:

Hastelloy Dies

Hastelloy C-276 and C-22 provide superior corrosion resistance for applications processing aggressive polymers, chemical additives, or corrosive compounds. Hastelloy’s resistance to both oxidizing and reducing environments makes it the choice for chemical processing equipment where material compatibility is critical. We have 40 years of combined experience machining Hastelloy C-276 to the tight tolerances extrusion dies require, understanding the unique challenges of work hardening and thermal expansion in this difficult alloy.

Inconel Dies

Inconel 625 and 718 deliver high-temperature capability for polymer compounds and specialty materials that process at elevated temperatures. Inconel 625 is the most machinable Inconel grade and is our preferred choice for dies requiring thermal resistance without extreme hardness. We machine Inconel with spindle speeds optimized for the material’s work-hardening behavior, maintaining tight tolerances (±0.0001″ with EDM) and superior surface finish quality.

316 Stainless Steel Dies

316L stainless steel is the standard for food extrusion equipment, providing FDA-compliance, excellent corrosion resistance to food additives, and the ability to achieve mirror finishes required for sanitary processing. We understand the subtle differences between 316 and 316L and select the material appropriate for your application. Our surface grinding capabilities ensure dies achieve the mirror finish quality food processing demands without scratches or surface irregularities.

For extrusion equipment components beyond the die itself—drive couplings, gear train parts, and mechanical assemblies—we also machine 4140 steel for extruder drive systems and structural components where high tensile strength and dimensional accuracy under load are the priority.

Why Complex Die Geometry Requires 5-Axis Machining

Many extrusion dies feature complex geometries—irregular passages, angled surfaces, and 3D flow control features—that cannot be machined on traditional 3-axis CNC machines. Our 5-axis CNC capabilities allow us to machine complex profiles, curves, and multi-angle surfaces in a single setup, reducing setup time, improving accuracy, and maintaining the surface finish quality critical to die performance.
Complex internal passages machined with 5-axis allows for better material distribution, more efficient pressure balance, and better-quality final product. The ability to machine from multiple angles in one setup prevents the tool marks and dimensional variations that occur when multiple setups are required.

Our Extrusion Die Manufacturing Process

We begin every extrusion die project by understanding your specifications: the material profile you’re extruding, your production temperature and pressure, the die’s intended lifespan, and any material compatibility concerns. From there, we develop the machining strategy appropriate to your material choice and die geometry.
For dies requiring exceptional surface finish quality, we integrate surface grinding into the final finishing process, ensuring mirror finishes without scratches, tool marks, or dimensional variations. Dies machined in food-grade 316L receive special attention to sanitary finish requirements and material certification where needed.
Our 12,000 RPM spindle speed allows high-speed finishing passes in Inconel and other difficult materials, producing superior surface finish while minimizing the thermal stress that causes tool wear and dimensional drift.
