Hastelloy C-276 Machining Services

GQ Machining specializes in precision CNC machining of Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276), a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy known for exceptional corrosion resistance in the most aggressive chemical environments. With 40 years of combined experience machining this notoriously difficult material, we understand how Hastelloy C-276 behaves under cutting forces—from its tendency to work-harden during machining to the thermal expansion challenges that make maintaining tight tolerances difficult.

Our 5-axis CNC milling, wire EDM, and precision grinding capabilities allow us to manufacture extruder screws, twin screw elements, extrusion dies, mixer blades, and chemical processing components in Hastelloy C-276 with tolerances down to ±0.0001″ and mirror surface finishes that larger production shops cannot consistently achieve.

Why Hastelloy C-276 Requires Specialized Machining Expertise

Hastelloy C-276 presents unique machining challenges that separate shops with genuine exotic metals experience from those who simply claim the capability:

Work Hardening

This nickel alloy work-hardens rapidly during cutting, requiring specific tool paths, feed rates, and cutting speeds to prevent surface hardening that ruins subsequent passes.

High Cutting Forces

The material’s high strength creates substantial cutting forces that can cause deflection in long parts like extruder screws or thin-walled components like extrusion dies, making dimensional accuracy difficult.

Tool Wear

Hastelloy C-276’s abrasive nature accelerates tool wear. Maintaining consistent tolerances and surface finish quality across production runs requires understanding which tooling materials and geometries perform best.

Thermal Expansion

The alloy’s coefficient of thermal expansion means parts must be machined with heat generation in mind. What measures correctly during machining may not meet specifications after cooling to room temperature.

Our machinists have spent decades working with these challenges in food extrusion equipment, chemical processing components, and polymer processing applications where Hastelloy C-276’s corrosion resistance makes it irreplaceable.

Common Hastelloy C-276 Applications & Industries

Food Extrusion Equipment

Hastelloy C-276 provides the corrosion resistance required for acidic food products, wet extrusion processes, and sanitary applications where 316 stainless steel alone isn’t sufficient. We machine twin screw elements, barrel liners, breaker plates, and pelletizer components for food processing equipment manufacturers requiring FDA-compliant materials with superior corrosion protection.

Chemical Processing Equipment

The material’s resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking makes it the go-to alloy for mixer impellers, reactor components, pump shafts, and valve parts handling hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and chlorine-containing solutions. Our experience includes custom impeller profiles requiring 5-axis machining and mirror finishes on sealing surfaces.

Polymer Processing Equipment

When processing corrosive monomers or additives, polymer extruder manufacturers specify Hastelloy C-276 for screws, barrel sections, and mixing elements. We understand the complex geometries required for twin screw compounding elements and the finish quality needed for consistent polymer flow.

Laboratory Testing Equipment

Material testing equipment requiring corrosion resistance combined with precision tolerances benefits from our ability to hold ±0.0001″ on Hastelloy C-276 using EDM processes.

Material Grades & Specifications

We machine Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276) to ASTM B574, ASTM B575, and other industry specifications. This nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy contains approximately:

  • 57% Nickel (minimum)
  • 15-17% Molybdenum
  • 14.5-16.5% Chromium
  • 4-7% Iron
  • 2.5% Cobalt (maximum)

The material’s composition gives it resistance to both oxidizing and reducing environments, making it more versatile than Hastelloy C-22 for applications involving temperature fluctuations or mixed chemical exposures.

For applications requiring even higher strength at elevated temperatures, we also machine Inconel 625 and Inconel 718, though these nickel-chromium alloys don’t match Hastelloy C-276’s corrosion resistance in acidic environments.

Why Choose GQ Machining for Hastelloy C-276 Parts

Four Decades of Exotic Metals Experience

Our combined 40 years of hands-on experience with Hastelloy C-276 means we’ve already solved the work-hardening, tool wear, and thermal expansion problems that cause other shops to deliver out-of-tolerance parts or scratched surfaces. We know which cutting parameters work and which create problems three operations downstream.

Extrusion Industry Specialization

Nearly four decades machining food extrusion equipment and polymer processing components means we understand the complex screw profiles, die geometries, and mixing element configurations your equipment requires. You won’t spend time explaining what a “kneading block” or “reverse flight element” is—we already know.

5-Axis Capabilities for Complex Geometries

Custom mixer blade profiles, extrusion die curves, and twin screw element geometries require 5-axis CNC milling capability. Our high-speed spindles and simultaneous 5-axis machining produce the smooth surface transitions and precise angles that single-operation machines cannot achieve.

Superior Finish Quality

Small shop attention to detail means we can deliver the mirror finishes and scratch-free surfaces that chemical processing equipment manufacturers require for sanitary applications and reliable sealing. We don’t rush Hastelloy parts through to make room for higher-volume production.

Regional Proximity

Located in Youngsville, NY and serving manufacturers throughout New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, we provide faster turnaround than national competitors and can deliver personally for urgent projects.
