CNC Equipment Capabilities & Specifications

Understanding what a machine shop can actually accomplish requires looking beyond marketing claims. The real story is in the equipment—what it can physically do, the tolerances it can hold, and the materials it can process. At GQ Machining, we’ve invested in advanced CNC equipment specifically chosen to deliver precision work in difficult materials.

  • Rapid traverse: 1,400 IPM
  • Taper: CAT 40
  • Ideal for: Large extrusion dies, complex geometries, extended profile machining

Turning Capacity

Haas SL-20 CNC Lathe
  • Maximum turning diameter: 10.3″
  • Maximum turning length: 20-24″ (depending on part configuration)
  • Chuck capacity: 8″ three-jaw
  • Bar capacity: 2″ diameter
  • Spindle speed: Up to 4,000 RPM
  • Ideal for: Extruder screws, shafts, cylindrical components in all materials

Wire EDM Services

Our wire EDM capability enables precision work impossible on traditional mills:
  • Material: All conductive materials (Hastelloy, Inconel, stainless steels, tool steels)
  • Tolerance capability: ±0.0001″ (our tightest tolerance capability)
  • Applications: Complex profiles, intricate geometries, tight internal features
  • Advantage: Can achieve finishes and tolerances on exotic metals that would be impossible with conventional machining

Surface Grinding

For applications requiring mirror finishes and superior surface quality:
  • Grinding surfaces to tight flatness tolerances
  • Achieving mirror finishes on food-grade stainless steel (food extrusion equipment requirement)
  • Ra finishes down to 4 microinches or better
  • Material capability: All exotic metals in our standard materials list

What These Capabilities Mean

Maximum Work Envelope

With our VF-4 SS, we can accommodate extrusion dies up to 50″ in length, 20″ wide, 25″ tall. This covers 95% of the custom extrusion die work requested in the food and polymer processing industries.

High-Speed Machining

Our 12,000 RPM spindles on two mills allow us to machine Hastelloy, Inconel, and other notoriously difficult materials at speeds that keep tool wear down and finish quality high. This matters because work hardening in these materials intensifies with slower spindle speeds.

Precision Tolerances

We hold ±0.0005″ standard tolerances on all CNC mills. Using wire EDM, we achieve ±0.0001″ tolerances—critical for laboratory equipment, precision components, and applications where tight stackups are required.

Material-Specific Processing

Our equipment selection reflects our exotic metals focus. The high-speed spindles, rigid spindle taper systems, and flood coolant capabilities are specifically valuable for Hastelloy C-276, Inconel 625/718, and 316 stainless steel—the materials we machine most frequently.

Why This Matters for Your Project

The real value of understanding equipment capabilities is knowing what you can expect. A job that demands ±0.0001″ tolerances requires EDM capability—not every shop has it. A complex extrusion die with curves and angles needs 5-axis capability, or at minimum a shop experienced enough to set up multiple operations correctly.

Our equipment list reflects 40 years of combined experience understanding what it takes to deliver results in exotic metals and extrusion equipment manufacturing. We’ve chosen machines that handle difficult materials well and deliver the precision and surface quality that food and polymer processing equipment manufacturers depend on.
